Calling All Egyptian Mythology Nerds

Calling All Egyptian Mythology Nerds

Postby Wildfire » Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:11 pm

I'm Wildfire, and I have no idea which forum to post this thread in. Thus, it's going in what appears to be the most heavily-trafficked one.

Anyway, I'm a bit of an Egyptology buff (as well as someone who can't wait to get started cracking puzzles), and as you may have noticed if you were around when the countdown clock ran out, we got ourselves a brand-new sequence of hieroglyphs ready for translating. I've got a cropped screenshot here: http://i36.tinypic.com/35lb78z.png. Anyone want to help me out?

Here's what I've got thus far:

- In Gardiner's list notation the sequence is [M8] [G1] [M40] [N35 M17 S29] [A26 Z7], where the brackets denote the timer's spacing. I suspect the spacing is important, since they went through some trouble to cram three symbols into one division.
- Based on the directions the figures are facing, the sequence is read from left to right.
- All of the symbols except A26 have a phonetic meaning; A26 is used primarily as a determinative meaning either "to call" or "servant"
- I suspect the final Z7 could be used as a plural, making the last tile something like "servants".
- I also suspect the scroll (M40) is being used in the sense of books or ideas, since that would work with the whole "university" theme.
- The initial symbol, M8, is used to indicate the Egyptian season of "Inundation," corresponding roughly to the Northern hemisphere summer.

Looking forward to the start of classes!

well, I too love love love everything ancient Egypt... I even have a tattoo of hieroglyphs. I know that S29 stands or health (seneb), as it is actually part of my tattoo. I really wouldn't know the others off the top of my head without looking them up though

Has anyone been able to translate the symbols from when the counter on LU's page reset?

Image
M8:G1:Y1(Sideways?):N35:M17:S29:A26:Z7

I can't get it to translate, but N35:M17:S29:A26 means "summon" and has been used before.

A little help, please?

OK, here are my 2 cents.
Operating with following databases:
http://www.omniglot.com/writing/egyptian.htm
http://www.omniglot.com/writing/egyptian_det.htm
http://www.friesian.com/egypt.htm
http://www.greatscott.com/hiero/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transliter ... t_Egyptian

I'd say, we have here a mix of pronounciation and "generic determinatives"

Image
Pronounciation: for "SH"

Image
Pronounciation (a little bit complicated):
The picture of a vulture, this represents the sound of a "glottal stop" (or "glottal plosive"), which is a brief closing of the wind pipe, like a little cough. (Source)

third hieroglyph
is, as people already said, a Scroll
Image
compare:
words are often also written with "generic determinatives," glyphs that were not pronounced but indicated what kind of thing a word was, e.g. [...] Image which shows that a word has something to do with writing (Source)

Looking for "Summon" as it was mentioned her previously, I would say, perhaps "Summon" in this context does mean enrolling? It could have a meaning like "[start] of enrollment to the university"?

I know, every Egyptologist will laugh about me,

P.S. I just wonder about some pronounciations in Lostpedia, like Image, which should be "sh" (instead of SA) after my researches in my databases... Well, I also cannot wait for Hieroglyphics course!

Kosmopol - that does make sense. I wonder if the last glyphs might be used in the context of "servant" rather than "summon," since it's marked as being plural (unlike the previous sighting of the phrase), or perhaps both - something like "summon the servants of knowledge"? No idea how to translate the first two though...I wonder if M8 might be used to mean "summer" (Northern Hemisphere summer roughly corresponds to the Egyptian season of Inundation)? Could it be something like "summoning back from summer"?

:D I too fear angry proper Egyptologists...don't hurt me, I'm just an armchair enthusiast (and also psyched for the hieroglyphs class).

First three symbols combined have the resonance of

ordain, order ~ predestine - assign, settle decide

The use of "Predestine" is from Admonitions of Ipuwer, which is the text from which the original Hatch glyphs were probably lifted.

This glyph set is a summons or invocation for a jury.
